In Montana I saw a lot of landscaping done with mulch (or really large sawdust). Around here I see a whole lot of rock! It helps the water drain and rocks don't mold. I think probably it also helps keep down the bugs as the mulch would hold in the moisture and encourage the critters. The dirt around here has a lot of clay in it so any way to help drain the water away from your home is a good idea.

Feb 23 (53/365) Rocks in snow
